Bad School

God-awful. Disrespectful staff members, poor behaviour from students, lack of mental and educational support, just a sham of an institution. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone.

This school gave me an eating disorder

AGS is a hostile, competitive and neglectful environment, filled with incompetent staff who do not care about its students. I was a student here for seven years, and I had to deal with violence, bullying and sexual harassment among students on a regular basis. Any attempts to ask for help and support were silenced to defend the school’s image, and perpetrators were never caught. I myself was bullied, and had to go to counselling for two years because of the mental disorders it caused, while the safeguarding team did nothing to help. There’s also a massive drug problem, students vape in the bathrooms, use dipping tobacco in unsupervised classrooms, and deal tobacco and marijuana on school grounds. Utterly abysmal safeguarding.

Half the time, teachers don’t even show up to lessons. They just assign a task online and leave you to your own devices. I and several other students had to pay massive fees in tutoring just to scrape through our exams, because AGS doesn’t help struggling students as much as they pressure them to go to a different school. The staff are only interested in students who can improve their exam scores and make them look good, I have friends who report that they were personally instructed by staff to apply to Oxford or Cambridge despite their explicit wishes that they didn’t want to attend either university. In AGS, it is not what the school can do for you, it’s what you can do for them.

I regret going to this school with every bone in my body, these were some of the worst years of my entire life and I thank them for nothing. Don’t send your kid here.

Good in some ways bad in others.

Poor level of education but good safeguarding and respect for children. Children expected to work alone with minimal assistance from teachers 90% of the time. Running out of space for the amount of students.

Year7+

wounldnt recommend

Would not recommend. From a former student, unnecessary academic pressure from a young age (before gcse) leaves students overwhelmed. A lack of support and motivation from staff, many students complain that lessons are boring and teachers are uninspiring. Frequent accounts of bullying which are not acted upon by staff.

Year 7+

Wouldn’t recommend

I agree with other reviews that academics are put before mental health and well being of students. Academic standards are high which is overwhelming for many pupils. Many students feel drained from the excessive testing and poor support from the school. Many teachers are uninspiring and most pupils often complain about how boring the lessons are. Severe bullying frequently takes place but is rarely acted upon. From a former student, “it often feels as if staff just don’t care”. Would not recommend.

I love it here

I have been a student here since year 7 and am currently in year 12. I have nothing bad to say about it. I am autistic and have had quite severe mental issues for the past few years and have experienced nothing but support from the SEN team, my heads of year, and my teachers have been doing everything to help me do as well as possible in my GCSEs because last year my attendance was 40%. They are the only reason i was able to get into 6th form here. The teaching is mostly great, however some teachers have different styles so sometimes you need so switch (in upper years) to find out what really works for you. All in all my accommodations are met and i can cope with school most of the time due to their effort. Also i’m trans and all staff have been very respectful of my name and pronouns it’s been great.

Poor pastoral care

Academically very strong however pastoral care is extremely lacking. As a student at AGS I experienced bullying which was reported to the school however no action was taken against the other students involved. I struggle with pretty severe mental illnesses and spent several hours every week in the office as I could not attend lessons - my parents were never informed of this so had no idea about the severity of the students. From my point of view, academic standards are put before pastoral care and mental health, something which I know many of my peers agreed with.
