Just dont go here

The homework they give you is absurd and a lot of the subjects aren't taken seriously, for example german, the gcse was introduced as something REQUIRED and the system of how people got languages as a subject changed, before it was based off how well you did on a spanish test but then they changed it so everyone took it, unsuprisingly, only 6 people took german, 6!
the teachers used to be of good quality, some still very much are but lots are very cruel and do unnecessary punishments they did for students, one teacher ouright refused to let children drink water no m,atter the weather outside, whether it be 5 degrees or 35, the teachers obviously dont care about who they hire because one teacher was hired and sacked within a few months due to alleged racism and stealing a child's phone, do not go to a school who does not care about the safety of you
this isnt mentioned but they force you to take spanish as a gcse and that takes 1/4 of the options you would normally get leaving you with only 3, very limited options compared to other schools
uniform used to be sort of bad, it was a formal suit and tie, made you do the top button up for whatever reason but have gotten stricter and more picky with uniforms, if you want to have an easy time with uniforms, don't go here
Food is very incosistent, it can range from good/alright to you wondering how it legally passed school safety checks, the chicken can taste like a rubber sole, wraps they give you are way overpriced for what they give you (like 2.15 pounds for a wrap aproximately 10cm in length), and bagels and other foods can be scorched and not even edible, if you want to be healthy and enjoy safe school food, do not go here
teachers are increasibly strict and will give you a hard time for absurd things, for your own patience and well being don't go here
exams given are badly designed, for final exams of invidual exams, they make you do them all on the same day, an example is they will make you do the physcis, science and boilogy exams all on the same day, as well as for the essay topics like EPR (religious studies and ethics for those who don't understand),geography and EPR
children spend increased times in homework and will have to work way too much and be too competitive for this, and it is isn't an enjoyable healthy experience
PE is taken seriously, they tell you off for wearing a different shade of colour in your socks
because this school is in different hands, it has drastically changed in quality, I have never had a truly good experience from this school, so from your own wellbeing don't go here
not much to do during breaks except use your phone, play football and if you don't like those breaks will be miserable for you, also you don't get much of a break, you only get a 15 minute break and a 45 minute lunch, which happen in the format: 2 hours of lessons, 15 minute break, 1 hour of lesson, 45 minute lunch, 2 hours of lessons
the school has constant power issues with heating and random fire alarms going out, there was a bomb threat about 4 years ago, and there was sewer outages onto the main playground, basically sewage water acros the middle of the plaground, if you were to ask if there were these issues the teachers and members of staff woukld attempt to lie there isn't, also a lot of teachers lack basic human respect and mercy for students
the only reason I am not giving this 1 star is because I have learnt stuff higher than normal and I learnt how to study effectively and I know how to work hard despite pressure, but you can g et that from other schools
to even enter this school you need to pass an exam, if you do decide to do this exam, don't bother considering this school as an option

GCSEs

good for education, but way too good at discrimination

its a public school trying to disguise as a private school and they do nothing about racism or bullying, like ever. some teachers even ARE racist - a specific spanish teacher gave an assembly to her year blaming a terrorist action on islam/ "shariah law" and played victim when criticised. DONT take the bait and think you're doing something for your child. students target neurodivergent, ethnic or queer people for jokes and teachers do nothing at all about it. if you are a minority you really wont enjoy the discrimination you face, considering bourne as a town's lack of ethnic diversity and as a result the local community. you're better off not sending your child on the hour long buses either because shit goes down on there.

Great experience

I’m currently in year 9 at this school and i have to say that while i agree with some of the reviews, others are completely untrue. I have found that over the past 2 and a half years I have been at the school almost every single teacher has been incredibly helpful. Last year I was struggling with a lot of bullying and the safeguarding team, head of years and pastoral care staff couldn’t have been more helpful, they dealt with it discreetly. I have had very few issues with teachers and have found nearly all of them easy to talk to about anything. I recently made my GCSE decisions and have been talking to them and asking for advice, they all went out of their way to help me, and give me resources to help me make an educated decision. The very few issues I have had with teachers have quickly been resolved once they were brought to the attention of my head of year.

Academically, this school is absolutely amazing and the most teachers do absolutely everything they can to help

Not enough funding

Facilities at this school are too small. Therefore, only 12 out of 150+ students here at Bourne Grammar School (currently in Y12) can do the EPQ in 2022.
This shows how the school is overcrowded and not well funded.
There is only 1 teacher behind the EPQ so many students will be left disappointed when they come back to school on 6th January (after Christmas holidays) to find out they have not been selected due to the schools lack of support within this HUGELY respected program for universities and personal statements.
DO NOT send your child here unless it’s for science subjects as that’s all they seem to care about and put funding into - This can be reflected by the 3 million + new building ONLY used for science. Whilst the rest of the school is neglected with care and and being outdated - This can be reflected by the fact the school does not have a library for essay based subjects, which is the bare minimum the can add (currently to the date January 2022).
To the extent of my research all surrounding schools in Lincolnshire and Peterborough give ALL the students the chance to do the EPQ regardless of their current progress, as they have put in more care into this important program by having numerous teachers behind this project.
I truly feel sorry for all the students currently, previously and who will be in this 6th form in the future here at Bourne Grammar School.
And to all the students who are not selected and to those who did not apply to avoid being disappointed by the low acceptance of the program for the EPQ this year and previous years, I wish you the best of luck and hope it doesn’t put you down!

Don’t send your kids here ever

I hated it and left after my gcses because of how awful the school is. The teachers seem like they all hate children and blamed everything on us, the couple good teachers i did have always ended up leaving and going some else. there is no mental health awareness and the sporty kids were always favourited or the ones that were top of every class, if you were average or below you would never be noticed and hardly ever got any additional support, the head teacher was an absolutely horrid man who threw the whiteboard rubber around and hit someone once with it and shouted at you if you didn’t know the answer one biology teacher was awful every time i had to go to his lesson i would get so nervous and anxious and he would force you to answer his questions even if you said you didn’t know the answer and would make the whole class sit and watch while you struggled to say something and would refuse to pick on some else else until you said something, there was so much bullying going on that never got sorted or solved

Review

Having gone to this school for years, I'd say it's great. Teachers go above and beyond to teach, include and help the students. The sports facilities are excellent and the music department is outstanding. I never felt unsafe and always knew there were staff there to support me. Admittedly, the school food was questionable as some dishes were delicious and others werent but everyone was so kind and welcoming and the very few cases of bad behaviour were dealt with Quickly and successfully.

The school is average and you’ll do well if you’re lucky with teachers however it’s all based on results, they do not care if you have constant stress, are overworked and don’t get any breaks even in holidays. Some teachers are more aware and take this into consideration however they revive pressure to test us and give results in constantly. Pe is overall sexist and if you don’t look ‘sporty’ count yourself ignored, they have decent facilities but leaves other sections underfunded. It is very hard to ask for and receive help for any mental health if you even want to be acknowledged you have to be diagnosed but they generally aren’t bothered. Apparently there’s a nurse? Been there 5 years and never seen her. The uniform is also unfair and unjust the girls and boys is so different and girls are forced to wear skirts with no alternative and why are different colours needed?
Dress code is extensive and I’m unsure how this affects education, I understand in some circumstances but is still over exaggerating.
Some teachers NEED to be fired and after so many complaints I’m unsure how they are still there.
There are some lovely teachers who do make it worth it and putting in effort will lead you to good results but some areas need improvement, let’s see what the new headteacher does.

AVOID SCHOOL AT ALL EXPENSE

Absolutely shit school. Good teachers but they’re all overworked and underpaid the school is short staffed but they’ll spend thousands on a goddamn astroturf. There’s no pastoral support AT ALL. I was bullied here for 4 YEARS and they did NOTHING. They took the word of my bully and his friends that they did nothing wrong. My mental health was so bad at this school I nearly committed suicide. The school counsellor disappeared over a break with no warning and they never replaced him. There was so much favouritism with the sporty kids who could win the school medals and trophies, and the art department was so underfunded. My brother was expelled on a FALSE RUMOUR. The headmaster is a twat who would slap students’ desks for using the word ‘umm’ or ‘like’. The uniform is sexist. There was no proper education on mental health aside from ‘sometimes people have anxiety and depression’ - no how to seek support, no what other mental illnesses are there, nothing of the kind. So much pressure to succeed is put on the students it is ridiculous, some teachers will ridicule students for failures. Awful school. AVOID AT ALL COST
