There's nothing to worry about, though SMT need to modernise.

Hill House School is one of the best schools in the Northern Region that you can send your child to. I was here for 10 years, having left last year to pursue a degree at a good university which can be fully attributed to this school.

At the core, the school promotes Christian values with assemblies about twice a week for all year groups. Every Friday there is a main assembly where hymns are sung by all pupils (mostly Jerusalem!) and the Lord's Prayer is said. There is also a compulsory carol service. However, the school is multi-faith with a dedicated room available for religious worship. Each child is placed into a house, which the parent can choose, with each child being assigned a form. These are split into houses from Senior School with classes being mixed in Junior School. Everybody is assigned a form tutor which can address most needs however there is support from Housemasters / mistresses and the Heads of School if required. This support has always been excellent in the times that I have needed it.

There are reward and recognition systems in place which carry their own perks as well as a somewhat strict reprimand system.

The teaching and learning is excellent - there is specialist science and languages education early on and most staff have been in their profession for a number of years and are highly experienced. One of the few concerns is a high turnover for staff with them usually being in position for 2-3 years before moving on. This is a bit of a shame however there's not really a need to worry. Academic-wise, the workload is rather demanding especially for Year 7-8 though help is available should anybody need it.

A large concern from other reviews is the quality of food. There is nothing to worry about this; catering is done by a separate company and are committed to making fresh and healthy food. There are plenty of options available depending on dietary requirements.

The main disappointment of this school, especially in recent years, are the rampant differences in culture between the staff and Heads of School. There is a high turnover for a reason - the Heads of School have other priorities and tend to drive staff out or wear them down. Modernisation is required to ensure that the school survives for another few years as if you get on the wrong side of SMT or their children, the pastoral system can do absolutely nothing about it. Though this is an issue, I still without doubt recommend Hill House School to any prospective family. I feel set up for life and I owe it all to this school.

Terrible

Don’t even get me started on the food there’s quite literally stuff in if, and also very unfair with the staff. Full of favouritism and learning is bad. Barely anyone can focus with the terrible teaching provided. Teachers barely help when something is wrong, and don’t even understand what happens. All they do is believe he says and she says. Many mistakes in the school diary ranging from spelling mistakes to formatting mistakes, and even grammar mistakes. School couldn’t care to teach us about grammar to hide the mistakes they make and don’t even say sorry for it. They punish other people for mistakes but they do as well. I forgot this was even a school, it looks, sounds and is basically a prison. I do NOT recommend going to this school unless you want to ruin your mental health.

Let down

While the teachers are amazing in their subjects and attentive they are let down by the institution as a whole. They are over worked and have little time to truly focus on their pupils, something they claim to pride themselves on. The way the school is run is appalling, favouritism is rampant with clear special treatment to those who are friends with SMT. The people of Hill House school have a great family spirit and the opportunities that if offers to it's pupils is second to none. But again this is let down with how it is run, amazing opportunities crushed by unnecessary rules and over the top micro managing. While now an ex student, I would still like to see some change and modernisation come to the school as it's much needed in certain departments.

The best school ive been to. Hill House can be strict on uniform but teaches us very well to be respectful and gives every student individual attention helping them learn in the best way possible.

Great School

Great school, great education and decent people. Uniform rules are quite strict and uniform can be expensive. Issues are usually dealt with well, although the school isn't as openly supportive as other private schools are. It is definitely one of the best schools around, though.

Good

This school is good. They are very strict on uniform and makeup but overall teaching is good. Most of the teachers are nice. Food is good most of the time. Bullying isn't a widespread problem but sometimes doesn't get dealt with in the best way. Online school and covid has been great and very organised.
