Annan Academy was never good and i doubt it ever will be.
As a former student i was never properly accommodated at the SEN base, they were always disorganised for assessments, one biology assessment the person i was supposed to be having as a prompt kept walking in and out of the room and that in turn really distracted me. when people have meltdowns or get upset and cant articulate their feelings the teachers in the base are very dismissive instead of sitting down and calmly speaking to the person.
they never do anything about bullying, i had been bullied over an almost 6 year period and nothing happened. from people in my year , older people and people younger nothing was done at all. i got Harassed by a group of i'm sure was S1's who circled my table in the library and bothered me repeatedly over the 30min break until i left due to overwhelm. even when i was getting badly bullied in S1 nothing happened, even when i cried to teachers and purposefully avoided certain classes. i got in trouble for removing myself from situations i felt unsafe in.
the school environment doesn't do much to cheer one up either, after lunch and break are over there is food and packaging everywhere. you cannot walk an inch into the school without your shoes being coated in the remains of a discarded brownie. people in the school create an unsafe/unsafe feeling environment. crowding hallways, pushing , shoving
Students clearly have no respect for the cleaners of the school, at home people probably pick up things for them. it was a glaring issue in the library ever since the other librarian left and the other came in, if i remember quite a while ago there was rats in the school. very telling how many people are lazy and cant pick up after themselves or clean when there is clearly a huge bin at the desk.
speaking of the library , people no longer go in there to read or study they all sit in the far right corner , yell, shout, make a mess, get into full fights and vape. the computers are not taken care of by students, broken keys , pencil marks on screens , crumbs everywhere, sticky keyboard and mouse. they leave their food wrappers and paper lunch trays behind the computer.
It may be a "good school" for those who are vaping in those far corners of the school but for the ones they torment and bully it is not a good place for the ones who are neurodiverse or don't fit into the cookie cutter expectations of students. not all of us wear nike tech, white fox hoodies and short skirts.
this school focused more on what i could not do. not what i could possibly do. many experiences pulled me out of subjects, areas of the school and extracurricular.
the school shows were fun but there is a select group of people that go to see it just to snicker at the young people who want to act, want to be over the top. those people treat school shows like a spectacle to go out during half time and giggle to their friends about how "ridiculous" the people were and how "stupid" they look , how "bad" they were at singing and choreography. they are teenagers, kids even. this isn't Broadway. you are not watching a west end production, if you can do better or if your kids can do better sign up or sign yourself up
when it comes to respecting gender identity that is mentioned in the school handbook "The Equality Act 2010 put legislation in place to
prevent direct or indirect discrimination against
persons" the 2010 equality act states "includes discrimination based
on perception and on association Schools need to make sure that
all gender variant pupils, or the children of transgender parents, are not singled out for different and less favourable treatment from that given to other pupils. They should check that there are no practices which could result in unfair, less favourable treatment of such pupils. For example, it would be unlawful discrimination for a teacher to single out a pupil undergoing gender reassignment and embarrass him in front"
Furthermore google over view says " Teachers are bound by safeguarding duties and privacy laws, and forcing a student to come out can be harmful to their wellbeing" my pupil support teacher immediately outed me to my parents without my permission it is no ones right to do that. it is my decision to tell my parents by myself. not a teacher it still infuriates me to this very day
Annan academy. sort your students out and some of your teachers. teach students to clean up after themselves. teach them some basic respect and empathy. check students for vapes ! considering the people vaping are in S1 which is 12-13. the gates dont do much to keep people in and out since they are always open.
i hope you all do better in the future and correct the environment, students and behaviour
As a former student, my experience at Annan Academy was terrible, especially around my final year. I've had several friends who have been (and likely still are) bully victims, myself included, and very little is done about it. No, isolation, sending them outside the classroom, sending them to detention, etc does nothing. They don't learn anything, and they clearly aren't interested to learn. I even wasn't able to get into a N5 Maths Course, despite being promised that for about three years after completing my N4 Course, due to "lack of resources", despite having many empty spaces in my S6 Timetable, which would've easily have provided space to add Maths (laughably, I had managed to complete my N5 English Course as normal).
I worry for the Primary school children who will be coming to this Secondary School in the future. There are barely any good role models from the older kids, shown by their lack of uniform and showing respectful, willing behaviour. Several people use the bathrooms as gossiping and vaping hideouts during break and lunch, and I've, more often than not, seen litter dumped everywhere, even in the toilets and sinks, and toilet paper scattered around like party streamers. (Oh, AND half of the girls' toilets don't work, and there has still been no new soap vats implemented in there for more than a year now.)
If the staff REALLY want to improve their school's environment, I suggest they actually toughen up against misbehaving students, give them the proper education they need for the future, get things fixed and more secured to make their atmosphere more appealing and safe, and stop thinking stopping bullying works the same way as decorating the school walls with Anti-Bullying posters.
staff constantly preaches about Annan Academy being a “safe place” yet continues to do nothing about the constant bullying of queer/neurodivergent/minority pupils. it’s genuinely sickening to see, coming from someone who has had to endure this crap for nearly four years nonstop since I got here. educate your pupils properly and actually put an effort into stopping bullying, instead of just prancing around and turning a blind eye to the constant bigotry that goes on at this school.
