Ilkley Grammar School is evil

I had a friend at IGS who reported being racially discriminated by a fellow student and later left after the school didn’t do a thing about it even after being contacted by his parents.

Someone who was in my year had sexually assaulted a classmate and skipped school once people found out about it. Instead of acting on this, ex-friends of this individual were encouraged by staff to become friends with them again, referring to the assault as a “mistake”.

If you don’t want your children to risk going through things like this then do NOT send them to Ilkley Grammar School.

It’s so bad

Don’t bother with this school. They pick and choose when to care about students and they don’t give a flying toss about mental health. They will put certain students in isolation for one thing but then is a different student did the same thing they’ll turn a blind eye. The slt are very aggressive and only care if you have your coat on. If a student is in a lunch time detention or isolation they deny them any sort of food. The head of years only care about answering emails rather than helping students. They don’t care about bullying but care if a student has jewellery on. The borderline ABUSE and NEGLECT this school has to offer is disgusting. Isolation is getting locked in a room for the day by yourself. If a student is skipping lesson due to having panic attacks they get put into isolation. Students literally refuse to go to the hub because of the treatment they receive and teachers often square up to students trying to make them scared rather than resolving the problem.

Good school with lots of opportunities

This is a great school. There are some incredible opportunities like doing the ball crew for the ilkley trophy tennis tournament. There are lots of extra curricular clubs for everyone's taste. Most teachers are good, but some can be a bit mean. Mostly though, this is a great school and I would reccomend it.

Teachers dont care

My year 9 child is being faced with frequent homophobic abuse and the teachers and the year 9 head of year are not doing anything to help because it seems they only deal with issues that are easy to them!

50/50

Been there for 4 years, at first hated it because of how big and scary it was then loved it till year 9, after year 8 all they talk about are exams, there are genuinely some great teachers there, sometimes the support and help for the students well being is decent other times not, they seem to think give you a stress tap, telling you to go on a walk, take and bath and get 10 hours sleep will do the trick when they don’t even give us enough time to get 10 hours sleep on a morning. My parents always say that this is the easiest and best time going to school, but if a job is worse then this I’m good thanks. Personally my mental health has taken a massive decline over the past year and a half, they know about things and they are meant to be getting me help and support but have failed to do so yet. This has been quite a negative review, it is a nice school in a beautiful town and we are so lucky to have the walk to and from school we do have and the access to education and being able to choose what we study, I also love the fact that we get to pick pre options in year 9 instead of just jumping straight into GCSE options, there is one absolutely amazing teacher that I love with my whole heart, he’s always there when I need to talk and he gave me chocolate I came out to my parents , honestly it’s teachers like that we need in this world he’s the reason I’ve made it this past year, he’s leaving at Christmas and I genuinely don’t know how I’m going to continue through the school without him there. Anyway that was a bit depressing I hope you have a good day

Unreliable and over fixated on results

Far more bothered about exam results and competition with other schools than the students themselves. More of a business than a school.

Horrible.

School couldn’t care less for anyone. They’re fine with people being bullied, don’t help the students at all and even sometimes get physical with the students. A bunch of liars the lot of them. Only 3 good teachers. Can’t wait to leave.
