Newbattle High School

On my first day of school, I already had gotten made fun of for my hair. It was washed out dye, which made pupils use certain words to describe me which I didn’t like, and found it disturbing and distracting. Every where i went, there would be someone looking at me, and calling me that name which is totally unacceptable. Another incident occurred when we were learning about the Slave Trade. The class was watching a movie called ‘Roots’ which explores the history of the Slave Trade, and the origins of the N-Word. Since there was a lot of the N-Word being said in the show, some individuals in my class would look at me and smirk, since i am the only black pupil in my class. A lot of students who are more popular than others tend to make snarky comments against others who are less popular for no reason whatsoever. I have also noticed that many of the teachers tend to care more about the popular students, mostly boys instead of the real hard working pupils. They gravitate more toward them, and barely even tell them off for not doing any work, leaving the classroom at random times etc. It’s disappointing to see from my perspective, since they don’t really contribute a lot in the class, yet gain the teacher’s attention the most. I find it disgusting and rude. Another incident within the Slave Trade topic was that we had to write diary entries as if we were slaves which made me feel super uncomfortable and upset, and even the head of history makes micro-aggressions and barely even gets told off for it. It’s disgusting. The bullying here is not right.

Great staff who are trying but still a lot of bullying goes on. Amazing with assistance dogs and very accommodating
