Please for your child’s mental well-being don’t send them here!!!

Just before writing this review I will let you know that I was crying due to the exam stress the teachers are putting on us, and I’m not even in ks4 yet, let alone at gcse stage. Where do I start?
Well, firstly, the only teachers who have somewhat control the classes and two who respect their students and treat them like actual people not robots and one who just yells a lot and is extremely creepy towards his students (I won’t say his name but to the people who went here, we all know who it is). Speaking of creepy, the same teacher has once told me to ‘take my shorts off’ because they weren’t school uniform. I was wearing shorts under my skirt and were barely visable, you can speculate how he found out I was wearing shorts. Another thing this teacher has done is essentially revoke my friends privlages with exams and assessments, they were supposed to have not only extra time but also to be in a smaller room than the sports hall and taken away their figits on many occasions (my friend had really bad anxiety and needs stuff like this), when asked why, the teacher gave a vague answer with no explanation as to why this was.

I just wrote a whole paragraph and that was just on one teacher from the stuff coming from the top of my head. Let’s hear about the rest of the school shall we?

For starters, they let the people on respite or ‘phoenix’ do whatever they want, I’ve been called homophobic and sexist terms the whole time I’ve been in this school. I’ve got to many teachers and slt teachers about it and the phrase ‘it’s just a joke’ has been used so many times the words don’t even sound right anymore. My mental health alone has become so much worst than before joining this school, for speculation, once I couldn’t get out of bed for three weeks due to how poorly my mental health was, that was during lockdown, my parents had to physically drag me out of bed to have a shower and eat. The school may say that it has a good mental health and s*x Ed lessons but I’ve been here a for a number of years and I’m yet to see either of those lessons.

Don’t even get me started on the poor communications between teachers and students/parents. My god it so sh*t. My mum almost sent me to school today (it’s an inset day today) because there was no email or signification that we weren’t coming into school, I only found out three days before.

I once had a teacher yell at a class saying how we were going to be living our lives peeing in water bottle’s like Amazon workers and that she had no hope in us, and I’m a top set class with better behaviour than the rest of the school. There’s probably a lot more for me to talk about but I still have to revise for my exams and help my friend fight for their access to their privileges during their exams. Thank you for listening and if you ever need a reason to keep your child away from this school, this is it. I don’t want anyone having to go through the sh*t I’m going through, and all of this is from the top of my sleep deprived head!

Read if your looking at the schools reputation

As a current student at oasis academy mayfield it’s safe to say it has its negatives and positives. A negative is that some of the teachers especially senior members are very strict on uniform and often makes you feel like a criminal for not having your shirt tucked in. A large handful of Students are bully’s. A medium amount of students smokes and are thief’s. The teachers either can’t control the classroom, or are way to strict causing for boring lessons.

Some positives however is that there are a high number of after school activity’s for example LGBTQ+ Club for support if questioning your sexuality and a lot. And I mean A LOT of sports clubs. The headteacher is a very kind person and easy to talk to. I often learn new stuff everyday in lessons. Finally unfortunately not all teachers but a few of them will be happy to have a chat with you listening to your problems.

Overall Since I joined in 2018 the amount of after school activities/clubs, have increased massively. What let’s the school down mostly are the students. Recommended: if anyone sends their child to this school who can be easily manipulated to do something keep an close eye on the,

Of course this is only my opinion of this school. Everyone has a different experience depending on their personality.

For a public school, it’s pretty decent.

The school isn’t perfect, but overall it’s pretty decent. Now if your well behaved, quiet and you do the work you’ll come to realise that the teachers are pretty great. Now despite the fact that some teachers may seem difficult and strict, they really do actually care about you and your grades. And I really mean that. Well at least the teachers I have had do. I have had only one bad experience with one teacher, but they have left now so that’s not a problem anymore. Anyways the work in most subjects is reasonable as well as the homework, but also the subjects are really interesting (except for maths) and it’s because of the teachers passion for the subjects. Now the food at the school may be considered a little bit pricey for some people and it’s certainly not the highest quality of food, but it’s good enough and it’s certainly way better then it is in America. Also some students may find Mr Knight difficult to co-operate with as he does have high standards for students and he does have a strict uniform policy, but if you do what he says you’ll have no problem with him. I’m conclusion the school has its flaws but, the brilliant and passionate teachers as well as the many opportunities the school provides easily outweighs the cons.

(P.S this review is based on my experience of the school and the teachers that I have had, but do note that other people have had different teachers and therefore have had a different experience of the school compared to mine)

Inside view

They have lessons for mental health issue but ironically this school causes more mental health problems then normal, it's a terrible school. Too homophobic and racist. The students are horrible and honestly are going to be future problems. No common sense, they would rather have the students dying from hypothermia while having good uniform then anything else. The toxic uniform is beyond normal at how strict it is.

Terrible

The teachers don’t care about your mental health they only care about grades. This school is literally terrible a couple teachers are good and can be trustworthy though most of them don’t care about you at all. The uniform policy is ridiculous and offers no freedom for students whatsoever. Don’t even get me started on the food it is basically inedible

traumatised

never ever go here please for your own safety. horrible school doesn't care about you only wants good grades off you so they can look good. care too much about uniform to a worrying extent. the lessons are dry and not helpful and they put too much pressure on you to do well. a certain amount students are potential criminals with the things they get away with saying. I've heard many male students say how they want to do innapropriate things to people in younger years and/or teachers loudly in corridors almost proudly. the students also do not accept you and are very homophobic/transphobic. the staff are either not in control of the class or are too harsh. two or so members of staff are very creepy and they don't really do anything to solve this. also, after one member of staff was caught hung over they did nothing about it. all this school wants is to look good and make sure you don't complain in any way they want you to keep your mouth shut and just go with the questionable things that happen there.

Don’t recommend!

Students are bully’s, teachers are bully’s. Just over all a bad school. Ruins your mental health. School should be a place where you can be yourself, but here you can’t

It was awful

Absolutely awful and I was a new student. They do not care about mental health it took me three months to get offered an arrangement for me to take my exams. They used covid as an excuse yet little did me and my mum know they had 4 kids that had an arrangement to take exams which meant I missed taking most of my gcses.

Almost humorously problematic

As a former student (2019 leaver), I can say looking back the overall experience I had was poor in terms of staff etc. I feel writing this review could be an opportunity for Oasis staff to make a real difference rather than the facade they like to create.

From my younger years 7-9, I can’t say I have any prominent memories but as for my final core years I am aware of the lack of unprofessional and disconnected behavior from staff.

This issue for me, was more of a systematic, stemming from the leaders of the academy rather than individual teachers. Most teachers were kind but there was always a strange barrier between the students and its head staff/ office staff. It seemed to me as though they had no interest in us as pupils but rather were money driven or cared mostly about self benefit. The entire atmosphere was split between the strict perfect appearance and casual daily setting students were expected to keep up with.

Staff etiquette:

There are multiple types of staff. The classroom teachers (being the more relatable members), The heads and the unwelcoming student services. Though they pretend to uphold the standards of the academy’s code of conduct when the cameras are rolling, class teachers were fairly casual and lenient. The heads however seemed blinded by the reality of children.

It was as though we were expected to be perfect representatives of oasis when they needed the world to see but they weren’t so passionate when nobody was watching.

There’s much to say about staff, but Finally the student service was just bad. You knock the door, they for some reason feel burdened to do there jobs. You tell them what’s up, they brush it off or feel irritated by your presence. I don’t understand that logic being the main purpose is student assistance.

Terrible communication:

Unable to contact parents thoroughly despite multiple office staff. I wonder what they were always so busy doing. Almost as if the main priority isn’t the students after all.

Communication between students and staff was also lackluster. Many issues had been raised over the years by students to the academy who almost always failed to address or adapt to any of them.

Lackluster (or no) approach to conversations outside standard curriculum such as social issues like sexual assault, consent, lgbt+ relationships, safety in sexual relationships, financial advice, mental health, Racial/ Minority/ diversity conversations.. We are living in society where young people are more aware and outspoken than ever, these things are too prominent go disregarded.

One positive note I can make about Oasis is the amount of School trips they often arrange.. Oh wait. I forgot that oasis literally doesn’t know what a school trip is outside of that annual science day only privileged top students are given the opportunity to attend. Apparently other students aren’t worthy because they don’t understand mitosis enough.

Finally a point I feel is uncategorizable... supply teachers.

Why. Who on earth is hiring these people? Do you guys just bring in random people walking down Ashley crescent?

The vast majority of supply teachers know less about what they’re doing than the students, yet students are still expected to behave as if this is normal? How can you believe young children will not take advantage by nature when faced with somebody who clearly isn’t qualified to teach them. Though there is a maturity/ moral aspect for older students, younger pupils are never going to prioritize a lesson over an hour hangout without a correctly regulated environment. I struggle to believe this isn’t an apparent issue the school is aware of.

Isn’t it a weird coincidence how the academically gifted students are always provided the best teachers and support though? Seems like you don’t actually strive for all students success, rather focus on those you believe will up the schools grade average.

On the accounts of other reviews, I simply cannot detail the bullying crisis oasis faces because it would be too lengthy. What that says about that should really be viewed as critical red flag.

Of course there are also admirable aspects of Oasis (Seems thought to be live, I know), unfortunately the bad will always over shadow the good. I just advise them to take a more truthful approach to educating the future generations, cut the act because no school should ever feel like a business place. It is so important for young minds to feel comfortable in there learning environment. If you truly want “excellence for everyone” you have actually to put in the work, not just look like you are.

Awful!

Some days I dreaded coming in simply becsuse of how awful it could be in there. The only reason this doesn’t get a poor grade is because I was lucky enough to have fantastic teachers who went above and beyond!

Management of the school is a joke, some teachers pick favourites and some students get out of punishment because they are related to the teacher who is supposed to be puinishing them!

Then there was the issue of some teachers just magically leaving and we not being given any explanation, whilst we have to do weeks of work not actually related to what we are doing until that subject-specific teacher can be found.

Bullying and rather disgusting behaviour is rampant, and therefore I would only recommend this school to your child if they are able to put up with the bullying and awful atmosphere in order to get good teaching. I cannot stress enough how good most of the teachers are, there’s just the small but powerful amount of members of staff who have no clue what they are doing.

Awful

When I was at this school the bullying from older people when I was in year 7 was awful and nothing was done about it. The school let a girl that bullied me to the point of feeling suicidal in my lessons and when I said the first day that she had already started it just got brushed
Off because it wasn’t taken to court. Recently, one of the teachers has been extremely rude to my sibling at the school (making fun of their disability as they is unable to do things) and the school are being told about this teachers actions and nothing is being done.

It is okay, to an extent

Attending this school, it has come to my attention that the culture of the school is very toxic. It is full of roadmen and chavs and my fellow students are just plain disrespectful. The staff are kind and the grades are very standard. The cleaners do take much care in cleaning the school due to Covid-19 aswell. It is just the students and how they usually do not listen to rules and regularly break stuff.

Though, everyone in the school are treated very equally. This extends to every type of student (POC, LGBTQ+, disabled and gender)

Overall, attending the school is nice and I feel as if I am improving my grades and personal self, but the students are very toxic and the teachers do bare minimum to help.

Thank you for reading and have a wonderful day!
