A Grand parents view of this school.

I am a grandparent of a pupil who attends this school so I have no direct contact with either headmaster or teaching stall. This review is based solely on my granddaughter’s experience which I have absolutely no reason to dispute.
When I attended Wigton Secondary Modern school pupils had a specific teacher teaching a subject they were actually trained to teach and were capable and expert in doing so. Surely this is one of the fundamentals of the whole education system.
Unbelievably this is something the head of departments and ultimately the head of the school seem unable , for a variety of reasons and excuses, to be able to accomplish with any great success.
There has always be good, mediocre and bad teachers and although some of the mediocre ones might slip under the net, in my experience you remember the particularly good and exceptionally bad teachers for the rest of your life. This should be a concern for this school, especially the maths department whose teaching and class control standards are I believe to be unbelievably shoddy.
Granted the pupils are well turned out due to the strict dress code but this only patches over and hides the fact that the average pupil attending this school is being failed be incompetent management and some teaching staff.
OFSTED came to the conclusion that the school was ‘good’.
Perhaps OFSTED should look back in time when the Nelson Thomlinson in Wigton was an excellent school and was highly respected in the town and further afield.
In my personal opinion it is a shadow of its former self.

The school is a disgusting place, all the teachers are rancid especially the current deputy head who acts as if she is the most amazing person as she can tell students when to wear and where to go even if they haven’t done anything in particular rules. The rules at the school are unnecessary for example skirts have to be down to the knee and you are allowed to wear bracelets and necklaces but you cant get them out in front of the teachers or you’ll have a hour long detention at lunch it’s the same with ties and blazers: if the logo isn't showing on your tie or your blazer is off you’ll be in detention with no time to go outside or eat your dinner overall i don’t recommend sending your children to this school as the academics are terrible and they won’t learn anything but how to live in the 1800’s when sexism and homophobia was acceptable.

It’s just a bit rubbish isn’t it

Some teachers are lovely.
Most are not.
Especially maths teachers for some reason.
The pastoral staff is completely unjust, you could be 100% right but if a teacher decided you weren’t don’t think you can defend yourself.
2 English teachers in particular are lovely and they know who they are.
The business team are all lovely.
Most science teachers are boring.
The history staff are entirely awful except for the one male teacher who actually knows what he’s talking about.
The computing team are all lovely.
Some teachers hate the children and I have no idea why they work in a school.
The food is not great, but it’s decent enough.
There’s a lot of clubs which is cool I guess.

Don't come here, it sucks.

The schools food is horrendous and nasty. All the cheese on the pizzas are tacky and the variety for vegetarians are awful. They asked us if we wanted vegan/vegetarian options knowing the majority of the school aren't vegetarian even tho the minority that are can't get much at the canteen just so they didn't have to do more work. The majority of staff don't care about mental health and just care about grades and how you look. Some of the teachers are really nice. The rules are stupid like all skirts have to be to your knee, your logo on the tie has to be showing, you can wear jewellery but can't show it?? And if you don't follow all these stupid rules you get a put into h16 for lunch. Even if it's scorching outside we can't take of our blazers until it's past 20 degrees and when it's freezing we can't wear our coats inside because apparently our blazers are warm enough when they are actually thin. Overall don't come here unless you want your mental state to be ruined, bullied and don't want teachers to be helpful.

The Nelson Thomlinson School review.

Since the expectations are relatively high compared to most schools, I'd say it's hard to settle in (or at least that's how I found it). However, after year 8 I had been past detections and all the rest of it and I was settling very well. I find that the teachers are pretty good and I even get on well with some of them on a more personal level. The building itself is very good although the art department needs a bit of work, however, science department in particular, the building looks modern enough to look well kept but not too modern to become overwhelming. The other students are very nice and I have made a small group of friends. The food, unfortunately, isn't as good. With the reluctancy to inform students of ingredients, allergy information or even what the price of the food actually is (you have to find out by attempting to pay for it), I find that to be an absolute diagrace. The kitchen staff aren't particularly pleasent either. I think a fix is needed for other students. I would suggest maybe a better notification system to inform students of price changes or even what is being served. Overall, this school is a good first choice academicly if you live in the area but be warned about the food and hygiene.

Meh it’s okay

Some pretty good teachers but some have a massive ego complex and run the place like it’s the 1800s. Slightly sexist, slightly transphobic. Just the usual. Good crack but you probably won’t get through without developing at least one mental illness.

VERY BAD

The teachers never think about your feelings and will continue to shout and call you names, overall this school is not good at all for bullying or anything along those lines

The truth

Well the school is decent a few of the teachers sleep with sixth formers but that’s not illegal so it’s fine and the average grades are like 6s school is good crack but serious when it needs to be so recommended
