Buchanan High: A Place That Broke Me Instead of Building Me

Let me be clear—Buchanan High was a traumatic experience.
Not just uncomfortable. Not just “a bit rough.”
Traumatic.

The staff almost never took me seriously. I tried to be a good communicator, to express how I felt, to explain my needs—and I swear, the adults were more dense and disconnected than the students. They spoke to us like we were six. One teacher literally walked in and said, “Alright everyone, put your Mickey Mouse ears on!”—and we were fifteen. It was humiliating.

This school didn’t help me.
It trained me to mask, to shut down, and to stay silent.
If I showed emotion, I was labeled “difficult.”
If I asked questions, I was “too much.”
If I didn’t play along with their fake, sanitized system, I was treated like a problem to manage.

It was so bad that I literally tried to run away from the school—twice.
I’d do everything I could to stay at home or hide in the building just to avoid class.
Not because I was lazy—because I was surviving.

One moment I remember clearly: a teacher took a photo of me during a “fun” moment—paper crowns for some Scotland celebration. And in the background, the music teacher was doing this “aww” face with her hand on her chest, like we were some kind of charity case. I died inside. That’s what this school does—it turns your life into a feel-good story for everyone else, and you’re just supposed to smile for the camera.

The worst part? They probably still think they’re helping.

If you’re a parent reading this: don’t send your child here.
If you’re a student who’s already been here: you were never the problem.

I was angry, isolated, misunderstood—but I wasn’t wrong.
Buchanan High failed me. Full stop.
