A School’s Failure to Support Autistic Students

I am a former student of this school, who had to endure four years of misery and frustration in a place that claims to be “diverse and inclusive”. However, nothing could be further from the truth. This school is a school of disgrace, where behaviour is out of control, support is non-existent, and respect is selective.

The first and most obvious problem with this school is the behaviour of the majority of the students. It is not an exaggeration to say that this school is a war zone, where bullying, violence, vandalism, and disruption are rampant. The teachers are either powerless or indifferent to stop the chaos, and the administration is too busy covering up the scandals to care. The school fails to handle behaviour which is now at an extreme level, and the consequences are dire for the students who want to learn.

The second and most personal problem with this school is the way it treats its autistic students. The school claims to be strongly “diverse and inclusive” however fail to fulfill this in their catastrophic failure to provide support for autistic students, changing their learning environment at a moment’s notice. As an autistic student myself, I can attest to the fact that this school has no regard for those with autism, and cut their support quietly and at short notice. The main purpose of their “inclusive environment” is for good press, not for genuine care.

The school used to have a special unit for autistic students, where they could receive individualised attention, sensory breaks, and social skills training. However, without any consultation or warning, the school decided to close down the unit and integrate the autistic students into mainstream classes. This was a disastrous decision, as it exposed us to sensory overload and social anxiety. The school did not provide any transition plan, any accommodations, or any training for the teachers or the peers. We were left to fend for ourselves in a hostile and unfamiliar environment.

The third and most minor problem with this school is the food. The school’s food is moderately acceptable, however health is clearly not a priority, as almost all of the food is high carb and high sugar. The food is provided in cardboard boxes which get soggy and sometimes forks go through the bottom. The portions are also meagre, and the prices are exorbitant. The only redeeming quality of the food is that it is edible, but barely so.

The fourth and final problem with this school is the staff. The staff have a lack of respect for those that follow the rules, yet they respect those with bad behaviour as they are intimidated by them. The staff are quick to punish and criticise the students who try to do their work, but they are slow to praise and reward them. The staff are also biased and unfair in their treatment of different students, favouring those who are popular or athletic over those who are academic or artistic. The staff are not supportive or helpful, but rather condescending and dismissive.

In conclusion, this school is a school of disgrace that does not deserve its funding. It is a place where learning is impossible, where diversity is ignored, where health is neglected, and where respect is conditional. It is a place where autistic students are treated as burdens and nuisances, rather than as valuable and unique individuals. It is a place that I would not recommend to anyone who values education or human dignity.

Chipping sodbury secondary school

School is a complete and utter sh*t tip. Horrible staff who don’t care about anything you say, horrible to parents and teachers and over all a really bad school. The head teacher should be fired immediately for her actions and so should some other teachers!

Average

Pretty average, although behaviour is rubbish and the school uniform looks bad, the skirts only fit 1 body type and the trousers don’t fit everyone right, also the jumpers get bigger everytime they’re washed and are way too long
