Music is good but nothing else

I left the school after yr 8 and it wasn't great. If your in the lower sets you don't matter, you could be getting sixes on tests and just because your in a lower set you will be told to aim for a 5.Another person I know who left had a noose put around their neck by a class mate and was told to kill themselves multiple times, the school did nothing about this.A friend who had a difficult home life and had been self harming was not helped by the school aswell. The SENCO is rude and will not help anyone.one of my siblings was refused extra time on GCSEs even after being diagnosed with ADHD.Many of the kids will be smoking and vaping while in school which the teachers will know.A friend was being harassed by someone and defended himself and was punched in the face by this kid.even though it was in lesson changeover and many people saw the school only agreed to check the cameras because they didn't believe him despite his visibly bruised face. The kids there will constantly be swearing at eachover and saying slurs. There were vietnamese twins in my class and as English wasn't their first language they often didn't understand things people would say to them, kids took this to their advantage and would say racist things to them everyday.uniform is all that the school cares about.in assemblies they talk about what a great school it is,it's not.Bullying, harassment and racism are things that happen on the daily here. The best parts of the day are break lunch and leaving the school at the end of the day everything else just sucks.Music lessons are the only good lessons in my opinion, they have alot of instruments to use(drums, acoustic guitars, bass guitars and a lot of keyboards) other than the music lessons the others aren't great. There are are 2 secondary state school around here and still somehow it's the better one.if you can't afford to send your kids to a private school you should move.these schools are bad.

Brilliant School

Brilliant school - fantastic dedicated teachers - excellent curriculum - tremendous extra curricular activities and opportunities for students to expand their interests - wonderful students and excellent exam results performing well above the national average for the country and some of the best results in Cornwall.
Ignore all of the nonsense posted by some parents and students on this site - they clearly have a grudge to bear.
Richard Lander is a great school. Check out their Facebook page to see all the wonderful things going on.

Not very good school. Think again before going

The school isn’t the worse, but it’s certainly not good. Considering we are not even half way into october, this academic year I have already received 14 behaviours. NONE of these are for rudeness, no effort, or backchat they are all for my skirt, the logo on my socks and the length of my socks. I have mental health issues and when i went to talk to the ‘staff’ they did not help me, they behavioured me for my socks and sent me back to class without me being able to talk to anyone. I am not bullied at this school but the amount of kids i are getting picked on is appalling. The racism, sexism, homophobia is ridiculous. The teaching is very very good but only for some people. The way they work is If your clever they care, if your not- they don’t. Please think twice about sending your child here.

How are trainer socks "S3xually distracting"?

I am bullied every single day. I have reported it to student report multiple times (close to 10) but all they did was say "Don't do that." like once. Other times they do nothing.

It's ridiculous.
They also care about socks. I asked a tecaher why we couldn't wear trainer socks and he said that it was "sexu4lly distracting,"....

WHO IS SEXU4LLY ATTRACTED TO ANKLES?
Who says "Omg, look at them s3xy ankles 😏"

I wouldn't reconnect sending your kid there.
I found a hair in my canteen food and it was really, really long

Disgrace

This school hasn't made any improvements since my child left in 2018. Many unhappy children were forced to off role. A complete disregard for young people's mental and physical health. No space to sit down for lunch. No where to hang up a wet coat. The special educational needs of young people is ignored. The entrance is a staircase which is unsafe. The staff morale is poor. The young people's morale is worrying. This school needs a serious shake up from the top down. Shameful.

They just teach useless stuff and don’t care about our mental health or what job we want to do

⚠️Please Read This⚠️

This school has everyone fooled.
I've heard people say that it's the best school in the area. I have to admit, they have the outside world wrapped around their finger.
They celebrate mental health awareness week but if a child has a panic attack or is having a hard and mentally challenging time they say, "Your just attention seeking."

Their way of dealing with bullying is awful. They celebrate Anti-Bullying week but don't care if a child is bullied.
I am constantly bullied. I'd tell you why but I don't want too because well, I just don't.
They call me names and pick on me for things I can't control.
I was bullied for moving down a set, I get called names too and not a single lesson goes by were I don't have someone picking on me. The seating plans suck.

The canteen food has hairs in it. Gross, if you ask me. I purchased a cake a few months ago and I found a very long, brown hair on it. And it's not mine because i'm not a brunette.

They care very deeply about the colour of our socks. They even care if they're ankle socks.

If you are trying to decide if you should send your kid to RLS or another school. I recommend the other school.
The only thing good about this school is that is safe-ish. They sometimes leave doors unlocked however.

Terrible. Honestly

I'd like to start by saying that their way of dealing with bullying is awful. I go to student support about it and they say "Oh. I'll do something". They don't.
They never have and probably never will.
They don't care about our mental health and care more about our socks.
We can't wear ankle socks or white socks.

Teachers always have this huge god complex. I was issued 3 behaviours for the stupidest reasons. It was my science teacher. I was in a group of three people and we had to do this science thing and we had to do our part after each other so the first girl to do it took ages (the whole lesson) for the equipment and then the teacher said "all right everyone pack away" so my other friend snatch the stuff of her it was so selfish and started Doing the project and I said "can I have a go" and she said hold on let me just finish I got in trouble and got behaviour because of both of them and the teacher wouldn't listen to me.

If you have a reasonable excuse for not having homework like "My Gran Died" or "I was really sick." they don't care. You get an instant behaviour.

Getting merits is a piece of cake for year 7s. I had 200+. But in year 8 I only had 20. It only got worse. And it wasn't my behaviour.

Let's talk about the bathrooms. The locks don't work, the toilets don't flush, it's always left a mess and kids are always vaping and making tiktoks. The soap dispensers are never full and you know those machine where you put in money and get a pad or tamp0n? Those are a scam. They don't work. There's g stuck all over them.
There is also pee on the floor.

Please for the love of all things sweet salty and sour, FIX THAT SCHOOL.

Thankyou for your time.

PS: If you don't wish to get trammelled to death don't come here. The hallways are a nightmare.
I'd also reccomeng avoiding the cakes they sell. They always have hairs.

Son goes to this school based on a jail

I would give no stars , so much bullying ,my boy has his bikes kicked in so many times in 3 years I've paid thousands. Told to buy decent rugby boots at lockdown, on long term sick bought nikes never worn. Allowed to swear in school, allowed to pick on and bully nothings ever said I've rung about my boy alot they tell him they've spoken to me but I can prove they never have.just him getting asked which makes bullying worse ,I'm sure teachers like kids leaving broken

Ok so I really dont recommend sending your kids to this school. They all think anyone with a mental health issue is attention seeking and should just "get on with it and go home" I WAS LITERALLY TOLD THIS AFTER I WAS FORCED TO TELL THEM ABOUT CUTTING MYSELF.
This school makes me sick and I'm not surprised if it makes people depressed and anxious just thinking about going in. Not to mention the teachers little golden boys and girl who will just go on bullying and bullying it's not ok.

Very very poor almost disgraceful

I was an ex student at this school and as i have seen alot of people share the experiences ive been through unfortunately I’m not the only one who experienced these things. The first year i was being heavily picked on especially in my drama classes I renember telling a teacher about a certain child and the teachers excuse was “they have adhd” as someone who knew many people with this i knew at that young age it was not an excuse and how pathetic there attempt too stop harrasment is year 8-9 was overall okay but as i got into year 10 and 11 things durastically changed as over lockdown and as we grew up i like many others found love of jewllery accessories fashion etc i was heavily picked on by the teachers while others they blindly watched walk past with the exact same stuff i had on over these two years I developed serious mental illnesses i didnt come into school very often as i find and found just living very difficult but when i did come in i was picked on multiple times i was sent too student support having a mental breakdown because i just wanted too be allowed too exist they were obviously by now aware of my issues but still continued too pick on me and it felt like it was mainly me.
Once the headteacher himself pulled me aside he gave me 4 behaviours one because of the jewllery i was wearing 2 for my pe joggers rope (too tighten or loosen your joggers with)being a different COLOUR 3rd because i had “ignored his rules” and fourth because of my ear jewellery he was going too confiscate it until my parents came and picked it up as i said someone who they were also aware was mentally ill this didnt help me on this certain day i was never a bad kid always behaved did my work but apparently being different which is what they “strive” for is not okay and i was harassed for existing so many similar incidents happened like that one and it really crushed my mental state even more and i felt so trapped and i couldn’t get out . The unifrom rules are plain contradictory i see teachers wearing multiple bracelets rings piercings and they strive for “difference” but you get blasted as soon as you are they dont care about bullying you are just a number too them you are just money not only that i know a girl who was BANNED from going too prom a once in a lifetime experience for wearing a NOSE STUD they truly seem too enjoy making the kids lives a hassle and im so glad too have left like many others but please please do NOT send your child here unless you want them faking sick everyday developing issues and having daily “talks” with the head team please as an ex student save your child from the hassle and find a better school this school only cares about reputation and there numbers all they claim are lies they do not want you too be individual they do not stop bullying they do not care all they want is there paycheck please just do NOT send your child here

Want to send your child here? Please read this.

The teachers can’t be bothered to try to and even understand the trouble their students go through. The lead team spend their time crying over the fact that a student has their socks a nanometer too short in order to ignore the blatant racist, sexist and homophobic behaviour/individuals this “school” overflows with. Its entire existence it to make sure that the students that leave that place leave as socially crippled individuals who have no idea how to share their own opinions and blossom as a person because they were never given a chance to in the first place. As an ex student, i can’t help but wonder how much better my life would be if my parents were able to afford to put me in an actual school. One time the head teacher himself yelled at me in the middle of a corridor full of children, purely because i was wearing a coat. All the head staff thrive on knowing the fact that they destroy 5 years of a child’s life. Yet another major problem of this school is that they do nothing but grovel for money, knowing they are going to spend it on something completely useless. An example of this is how they’ve wasted money buying each year 11 tutor group a box of games that they are never going to even use because they will be too busy panic studying for the GCSEs that their snob-nosed “teachers” barely attempted to teach. Even a month after I had left school the bigots sent a bill to my parents trying to get them to pay for a trip to Greenland that never even happened due to the recent pandemic. Even worse, I never even took geography. Furthermore, they have never even understood what the words “safe” and “guard” mean, let alone put together. They happily leak private information because the authorities told them to do so. There’s only one way this rat hole is going to end up and its going to be ugly.

TLDR; from the view of an ex student, this “school” is not what it seems to be. Do you and your child a favour and do not send them to this school, it will ruin them and dehumanise them. You can’t trust any of the heads as far as you could throw the idiots.

It is a horrible environment to be in

The teachers care more about the colour of our socks than they do about our mental health. The lessons are mundane and drag on with little to no chance to have a break. The only upside to the school is that you get to see your friends for 45 mins a day at our lunch breaks that have been halved and our fifteen min break, that's as long as you don't have a detention for wearing the wrong socks or having a stripe of purple in your hair that is barely noticeable or need to go and see teachers. The homework is ridiculous, between the amount set to the content of it based on the fact we are never taught any of it to the ridiculous amount to complete in a ridiculously short amount of time. Teachers will always find a reason to have a problem with you even if you haven't actually done anything wrong. School ends up being draining you for 6 hours a day and however long you have to do homework for.

Id say the school is alright some teachers have genuine interest but others seem like it’s they’re job to nit pick at students, the education standards are high and the mental health support is developing slowly. But the bullying, homophobia and racism is a really big issues so be weary

Rubbish school

awful school they don’t care about my child’s mental health there is absolutely little to no freedom and they always brag about how they support individuality which obviously is not true my daughter was walking in the corridor and got stopped and confiscated her coat and earrings and was told by the headmistress that she could see my daughters pants which is inappropriate to even be looking there in the first place secondly she took away my child’s phone and lipbalm without any reasoning whatsoever awful school I do not recommend

Average school

Good school but not much freedom.
No appreciation for the students who graduated in 2020. Results of 2019 students and 2021 have been put on their website but nothing about 2020. Furthermore we sent in photos and surveys for a yearbook that was never distributed yet promised.

Didn't cope awfully well with the start of the pandemic but an alright school despite useless rule enforcement and focus on unnecessary rules rather than legal ones (more concerned about uniform than clear discrimination and bullying).

Awful, controlling school

I’m an ex student and my sister is still attending as a yr11. The teachers spend more time telling students off for what they’re wearing rather than actually teaching. Today, two of the teachers tried confiscating my sisters coat and phone merely because she was wearing her coat in the corridor. I was suspended twice from Richard Lander simply because I had more than 1 stud in each ear. If your socks are too high, have a logo, or are any colour other than black, then this is enough for the school to give you a detention. They’ll even give you a detention for wearing one of the SCHOOL hoodies during class. Unless you want your kids to go through 5 years of utter bulls**t, I’d recommend finding a different school.

Worst school ever!

Richard Lander is a school riddled with with racism, misogyny and homophobia. Staff spend lunchtimes drooling over under age children and the school is ran by a whites-only clique going by the name of "XDevoid". Further more, the ARK students are treated sub human being made the butt of the head teacher's jokes over the tannoy. Overall this school is not a safe learning space for any child regardless of age, race or gender.

Lack of Aspiration

Appalling school who write off the opportunities of students in Year 7 once they have been labelled as low achievers. Attitude of staff generally is to shout rather than engage with students and the application of rules is petty and vindictive, again further switching students off from engaging in learning. The resultant GCSE profile my son departed with from the school bore no resemblance to his actual potential; thankfully, the aspirational teaching ethos at Truro College enabled him to maximise his A level grades and move onto a currently successful university experience. A somewhat different outcome from that predicted by several staff at this school.

This school is god awful a teacher assulted a child and the us no mental health support and the rules are ridiculous and you aren't cared for or about unless you can do sports and they say yes to everyone meaning the school is overcapacity with students making it impossible to move from class to class and get food at lunch. They only care about grades and have a good public view do not ever consider this school

Superb!

Richard Lander School provides an excellent learning environment.
My child moved to Richard Lander at the end of year 8 from another secondary school, and as parents we wondered if this was going to be a good move, but we are so glad we made the choice. It was absolutely the correct one.
Our son has thrived since being at Richard Lander, and this is down to both the superb friendship network he has built up and the excellent care and attention of staff. They have provided an excellent level of pastoral care and education, and have helped to nurture my son into the fantastic year 11 student that he is - despite the most difficult and challenging of times this year. Their level of home education has been second to none throughout the pandemic and this has supported my son's return to school.
The exam results have been and continue to be, among the top performing schools in Cornwall and this is highlighted by the fantastic curriculum that they have provided.
I fail to see how people have said that racism is not challenged, as I have seen first hand that the school provides a very inclusive curriculum, which includes the topics of racism, diversity and equality and I know that these issues are challenged throughout the school.
My son has valued his education at Richard Lander, and as a parent I have been nothing but complimentary and seen nothing other than caring staff and excellent teachers who strive to provide an excellent education for their students.
I would have no worries whatsoever about highly recommending Richard Lander School to anybody who is considering local secondary schools.

An excellent school!

Richard Lander School is an excellent school. Its staff are caring, friendly and knowledgeable. The exam results that the school attains are significantly above those of other schools both in Cornwall and nationally.
Although many of the reviews are written on the same date or within days of each other (which may suggest they are from the same person or source), I am amazed to see suggestions that the school does not challenge racism, as that is certainly not my experience. I know it is challenged on both an individual basis and systematically in PSHE lessons and through school assemblies. Indeed, Richard Lander school supports several schools in Uganda. Students raise funds throughout the year and then sends upwards of 80 students to Uganda each year to oversee and assist with the spending of these funds. This does not mean an individual student could not issue a racist slur, but certainly it would be challenged by the school.
The school also leads on diversity and ecological issues within the county and has been the host school for student events regarding these issues.
I can certainly highly recommend this school to anyone living in the area.

An excellent school

A wonderful school that allows students to thrive. The teaching staff are so knowledgeable and supportive and the exam results students attain are significantly above those of other schools both in Cornwall and nationwide.
I am astounded to see comments on this website that suggest the school allows racism to go unchallenged as that is certainly not my experience. I know racism is addressed in the school, both on an individual level and systematically through PSHE lessons and assemblies. The school also supports several schools in Uganda and sends up to 80 students out each year to oversee the spending of their fundraising, usually 10 of thousands of pounds, which takes place throughout the year.
Within Cornwall Richard Lander School also leads on diversity and ecology hosting events for students from other schools.
Certainly a school I would recommend to anybody who is in the area.

Swag!

I was a former member of the white people only club at this school, I was brainwashed by staff who teach your children that it would be the right thing to do, I have since learned that I have been misguided and will never think about white supremacy again! In my history course they glorified Hitler to make him seem ingenious and brave! I believe that this school is solely responsible for all the racism in South West of Cornwall. Black children at this school are bullied by white students, this is even encouraged by teachers and do nothing to stop it. Throughout the lunch and break you will hear many racist remarks towards minorities, this school is evil and I have nothing else to say.

Absolute HELL

Being a former student of the school i experienced nothing but sheer hell for the past 4/5 years that I attended. When you first join, they put up a facade of being this "Amazing" and "Outstanding" school who "Care about students" This is wrong however. As the years went on it seemed to only get worse. Lets start with the Uniforms, they have a black hoodie that you cant even wear in classes. Then there was the canteen food and hygiene which was absolutely appalling. I would also like to mention that the school made me severely depressed due to the lack of support i was getting with not just my learning, but issues i had going on with myself. Whenever i mentioned this to them however, they never took me seriously and instead told me to "man up" There are many other issues i could address but it would be too much to put here. PLEASE do not send your child to this school, unless you want them to be miserable growing up.

Awful. This school might be the lowest of the low for any secondly school students. My child’s maths teacher is getting lower grades on tests than him and there is constantly racist and homophobic scriptures on the toilet walls, not to mention the throwing of urine bags and fesses on the walls and sinks. Many teachers have also been described as ‘creepy’ when approaching girls with short skirts or boys uniform.
