I didn't go to Angmering for Secondary School but joined for Sixth Form which could honestly be the worst mistake I ever made. I'm not a loud student or someone who messes around in class, but from day one I was bullied by my history teacher for two years straight - with even other kids in the class telling me that they noticed how he treated me differently. It wasn't just him picking on me or what he said, but how he said it a lot of the time. He was like Mr Bumble from Oliver Twist when he asks for more food but on crack. Then he would go and speak to another student fine and I would be regularly reduced to tears, probably giving this certain teacher a kick because he must have known that, since I was quiet, I wasn't going to get rude back.
His behaviour was childish and very demeaning. It was the night before my coursework final draft was due in and when I told him I was the only student who hadn't gotten feedback yet, I was told 'what do you want me to do about that exactly?', I also had the wrong coursework submitted in English but this is another thing completely. It is not surprise that I had a breakdown in my A-Level exam, because I had been set up to fail on every level possible, and this is the only instance the sixth form staff cared because obviously my crying was distracting. On another instance with my history teacher, I had missed his class because of an appointment (DOCUMENTED ON THE REGISTER MIND YOU) and when he saw me walk into another class in his building, he stormed in after me, leaned over me as I sat down, slammed his backpack in front of me onto my desk and demanded to know where I had been. I wouldn't have minded if someone had, y'know, ASKED where I was, but his cold, patronising voice was only akin to a cartoon villain, and obviously I was never taken seriously when I made these metaphors to describe him, but that was the only way you could describe this teacher, because he was so over the top towards me but no one else. To no surprise, I was driven to tears in front of the teacher in the room, who didn't particularly care that I had just been barked at for being at the doctors, and left sixth form early that day.
I actually think almost every teacher was aware of this. The Sixth Form leaders certainly did, and actively chose to do nothing even when they were aware that I wasn't going to lessons or turning up to school due to him. I had, on multiple occasions, broken down into tears to my English teachers because of his behaviour. These were a little more helpful - one told me to essentially ignore him while giving me a sympathetic ear, while the other told me that I was using 'emotive language' and, while that felt dismissive, she did actually go to the head of History and ask if they could tell the teacher in question to be 'kinder with his words'... not that this led to much.
This wasn't the only scenario when I had to go to English teachers for help since the Sixth Form staff couldn't be bothered. For example I didn't know (since I was new and had no friends) how to get into the sports hall for the exams (you had to use the back door), and the staff up in Sixth Form refused to take me on the basis they had just taken someone else. I went three times to the wrong door, which the Sixth Form staff had told me to wait by, before going to my English teacher, now already late for the test, who had to get someone else to let me in the exam.
You could not pay me to send my future children there EVER!!!!! No care whatsoever. Worst time of my life.
the school is awful didn’t help my son one bit during the 9 weeks there full of challenging young students and the way the staff speak to the students is disgraceful never will i be sending any of my children there again
The worse schooo imaginable had to hand over your phone at the start of the lessons if caught you got 3 days suspended the teachers where all racist and sexist one teacher called me a Useless N word along side with other racist words Poor hygiene in the school teachers would not let you go toilet and they gave out detentions if you forgot a pen
I can honestly say this school has been amazing, they have supported my children with some additional needs amazingly. Through a time of crisis they have been a lifeline to my family. The staff are brilliant, friendly and helpful. I cannot thank them enough for everything they have done for my children and family. The facilities they have are incredibly impressive, and the effort the teachers put in is second to none.
Thank you to the staff of Angmering School, especially to the SEN staff who all go above and beyond.
A lot of the teachers do not care about the students. The rules are not about getting the best out of your education and doing the right thing, they are all about subservience and a particular teacher's ego. Having your shirt accidentally come untucked lands you an after school detention, however harassing people because of religion/race/gender/sexuality is not considered an issue when concern is raised. There is, however, a few brilliant teachers in each department who are genuinely passionate about teaching and the future of their students and will go above and beyond to help students achieve their goals. If more teachers were like this the school would have a much better reputation.
In my opinion, Angmering isn’t doing too well against Coronavirus, they’ve had a couple of cases. They aren’t enforcing the face mask rule or the one way system well. We have year group bubbles of 250 students, which I don’t think works well. There aren’t many entrances/exits so students are mixing bubbles without masks while entering and exiting buildings.
Angmering is a pretty good school! Especially with the new renovations. The sports are supposed to be great, but I’m not very athletic (hence my rating). The drama, science and music departments are amazing! And (before COVID-19) there were so many clubs for each subject! Very inclusive school. I’m very academic, so I often get the extra challenging work, but I just fly through it and get bored. They didn’t handle my bullying experience well though, as it is still ongoing.
